146 Northwood Dr, North York: A Mansard-Roofed Chateau with a Sculptural Curved Staircase and a Walkout Second Kitchen

At 146 Northwood Dr in North York, KingsGate Luxury Homes built a stone chateau that wears its formality with ease. A mansard roof crowns three finished levels, oval and rectangular dormers break the rooflines, and inside a single sculptural staircase curves up beneath an oval skylight. This is a home of clear rooms and rich materials: carved limestone outside, marble and hardwood within, and a walkout lower level that holds a second full kitchen. Here is a room-by-room look at the craftsmanship.

Exterior and Approach

The front elevation is dressed in pale carved limestone with a steep mansard roof above. Oval and arched-top dormer windows punctuate the upper storey, while a standing-seam metal canopy shelters a pair of dark stained-wood garage doors. The arched stone entry frames a leaded and etched glass door, and wrought-iron Juliet balconies with delicate scrollwork sit beneath the second-floor windows. A red Japanese maple softens the stone, and the interlocking paver driveway carries the same formality to the curb.

Behind the house, a rendered rear elevation opens to large windows and a wrought-iron balcony off the upper floor. Interlocking stone paving wraps a landscaped backyard with low stone retaining walls, garden beds and lantern-topped pillars, all framed by mature trees for privacy.

Grand Foyer and the Curved Staircase

Step through the arched front door onto a polished marble floor. The centrepiece is a single curved staircase with open treads of stained oak, wrapped in a continuous oak handrail over hand-forged iron balusters that scroll like vines. The stair sweeps up past a rounded balcony opening, and high above it a circular ceiling cutout holds a caged lantern chandelier. A large round sunburst mirror and crystal sconces dress the wall, with crisp wainscoting running below.

Formal Living and Dining Rooms

Off the foyer, the formal living and dining rooms run together along the front of the home. Oak floors, full-height wainscoting and tray ceilings with cove lighting set a refined tone. A marble-faced gas fireplace with a white painted mantel anchors the living room, flanked by crystal sconces, while sheer and patterned drapery filters the light. The dining room carries the same tray ceiling and crystal chandelier, with a glass-front display cabinet built into the millwork.

Wood-Panelled Library

A quieter room sits off the main hall, finished floor to ceiling in stained oak. Raised-panel wainscoting, built-in bookshelves and a cabinet base with drawers turn it into a proper library or home office, warmed by an oak floor and natural light from a single window.

The Great Room and Gourmet Kitchen

The rear of the main floor opens into a bright great room and kitchen. In the great room, a marble gas fireplace is framed by white glass-front cabinetry and panelled millwork, with soaring windows that pull the garden indoors. The gourmet kitchen pairs white perimeter cabinetry with a dark-stained island topped in speckled granite. A built-in stainless refrigerator, a gas cooktop set into the island and double wall ovens equip the space, and a stone mosaic backsplash ties the finishes together under a crystal pendant cluster.

A curved bay window forms a sunlit breakfast area beneath its own tray ceiling, while a butler’s servery connects the kitchen to the formal rooms. The servery is fitted with white cabinetry, granite counters, a built-in wine refrigerator and a pearly mosaic backsplash, making it easy to stage drinks and serve guests.

Primary Suite

Upstairs, the primary suite is a retreat in its own right. A gas fireplace sits within a white panelled surround, a tray ceiling carries a crystal drum fixture, and two walk-in closets flank the room. French doors open to the rear iron balcony, and a wall of windows keeps the space full of daylight over warm oak floors.

The spa ensuite is finished in marble and pearly mosaic tile. A freestanding oval soaking tub sits beneath a window with a polished floor-mounted tub filler, and a long double vanity with marble counters is set under two framed mirrors and an arched mosaic surround. A glass-enclosed steam shower with both rainfall and handheld fixtures and a private water closet with a bidet complete the room, all under a champagne-toned tray ceiling.

Upper Gallery, Bedrooms and Baths

The upper hall is an event in itself. The curved stair and its iron railings ring an open gallery, and a domed oval skylight floods the landing with daylight. The secondary bedrooms are generous, with tray ceilings, arched picture windows and wall sconces, and each is served by its own well-finished bathroom.

The bathrooms show a range of finishes: one pairs a white shaker vanity with gold-veined marble and a glass shower lined in linear striped tile, another sets a round rope-framed mirror above a granite-topped espresso vanity with a full mosaic-tiled shower, and a third combines a travertine tub-and-shower surround with a mosaic accent band. A walk-in closet with white built-in shelving and drawers, plus a dedicated upper laundry room with white cabinetry, speckled granite and side-by-side front-load machines, round out the level.

Walkout Lower Level with a Second Kitchen

The lower level walks out to the backyard and lives like a second home. A large recreation room is laid with polished cream tile and centred on a marble gas fireplace set between white glass-front cabinets, with rows of windows and an exterior door keeping it bright. Just beyond, a full second kitchen is fitted with espresso cabinetry, a white island, granite counters, a mosaic backsplash and stainless appliances, ideal for extended family or entertaining. A stacked laundry pair serves this level on its own.
